In October 2023, Charlotte Findlater Design was commissioned to lead the architecture, interior design, and complete renovation of a home in the picturesque English Lake District. The house, in need of significant refurbishment, required a comprehensive approach. Our team developed internal layouts and plans that included a new kitchen and hallway extension, a balcony off the master bedroom, a full re-roofing, and the replacement of all windows and doors. We also remodelled the internal spaces, staying true to our design ethos of blending regenerative design principles, craftsmanship, and biophilic design principles to create enduring, meaningful spaces.
Arts and Crafts Inspiration for the Lounge Design
Drawing inspiration from Blackwell, the iconic Arts and Crafts house nearby, we aimed to infuse the lounge with timeless design elements rooted in nature and bespoke design. Blackwell’s original decorative features, including intricate wood panelling and nature-inspired metalwork, served as our starting point. We incorporated these influences into the room while balancing them with a modern, contemporary twist that brings comfort, functionality, and aesthetics to the forefront for 21st-century living.
The Arts and Crafts movement emphasizes handmade, quality furniture and furnishings, a departure from mass-produced Victorian designs. This design ethos perfectly aligns with Charlotte Findlater’s dedication to resilience and timeless design, ensuring each piece in the lounge is not only beautiful but also built to last.
A Calm, Nature-Inspired Aesthetic
Surrounded by serene gardens, the home’s natural setting inspired our choice of soft, earthy tones and natural materials. We incorporated wood panelling, bespoke furniture, and floor coverings that reflect the calming influence of the surrounding landscape. The room is designed to offer visual richness and a peaceful atmosphere, ensuring it serves as a tranquil sanctuary for relaxation.
A Contemporary Take on Arts and Crafts Design
While rooted in traditional Arts and Crafts principles, we ensured the lounge was updated for modern living. Furniture pieces were carefully selected for their simplicity, durability, and craftsmanship, featuring rich natural woods and subtle curves. We also included contemporary elements such as ergonomic seating and lighting that highlights the room’s architectural details without overwhelming the space.
Custom Furnishings and Sustainable Materials
All architectural joinery, including custom panelling and furniture, was designed and crafted in-house using environmentally conscious materials. Echoing the Arts and Crafts belief in quality craftsmanship, our focus was on creating bespoke, locally sourced pieces that stand the test of time. By infusing natural textures, fabrics, and a muted color palette inspired by nature, we enhanced the lounge’s connection to the outdoors while maintaining a warm, inviting atmosphere.
A Timeless Yet Modern Lounge
Ultimately, the lounge combines the best of both worlds—an homage to the Arts and Crafts movement’s love of craftsmanship and nature, with modern updates that cater to contemporary needs. At Charlotte Findlater Design, we believe in creating spaces that are both beautiful and functional, ensuring that every design detail reflects our core values of regenerative design, timeless design, and biophilic design principles.
Incorporating these elements into the lounge design, we’ve crafted a space that not only honours the past but is also perfectly suited for modern living—an enduring, peaceful retreat that enhances both wellbeing and comfort.
