A Bespoke Duck Pin Bowling Alley and Games Room in Hertfordshire
Our recently completed Hertfordshire project saw the transformation and extension of a separate garden building into a bespoke games room designed for family life, entertaining and shared experience. Conceived as a destination within the grounds rather than part of the main house itself, the space was created to feel immersive, relaxed and highly personal — a place for hours of fun, but one still grounded in thoughtful architecture and carefully considered interior design.
Custom Duck Pin Bowling Alley for a Family Games Room
The brief was to create a custom leisure space for our clients that could be enjoyed by the family day to day and shared easily with friends. At the heart of the project was a bespoke duck pin bowling alley, with the bowling machine custom made for our clients in America. This became the focal point for the entire design and informed the atmosphere of the room from the outset: playful, sociable and full of character, while still feeling calm, cohesive and elevated.
Garden Building Extension in Hertfordshire
To accommodate this, we extended an existing standalone building within the gardens, carefully shaping the architecture so that the new addition felt integrated with both the original structure and the surrounding landscape. The external palette was selected to help the building settle naturally into its setting, with timber cladding and a cedar shingle roof bringing warmth, texture and a sense of softness to the architecture. Rather than competing with the garden, the intention was for the building to feel embedded within it.
Bespoke Cabinetry and Curved Oak Built-In Seating
Inside, the design focused on balancing function with atmosphere. We created a series of bespoke interior elements to support the way the room would be used, including custom cabinetry and a substantial curved oak built-in seating area. This seating became one of the defining features of the project — a generous, sculptural element that anchors the social side of the room and creates a natural place for family and guests to gather, watch, relax and spend time together. Its curved form softens the space beautifully, while the oak introduces warmth, craftsmanship and a sense of permanence.
Oak Ceiling, Oak Flooring and Underfloor Heating
Materiality was central to creating the right mood. We selected an engineered oak floor and continued the oak onto the ceiling, allowing the material to wrap the room and establish a calm, enveloping backdrop. This continuity gives the space a strong architectural identity and helps balance the energy of the bowling alley itself. Underfloor heating was installed throughout, bringing an additional layer of comfort and helping the building feel inviting and usable all year round. The result is an interior that signals fun and informality, but in a way that still feels refined and deeply considered.
Luxury Games Room Interiors with Layered Materials
To bring further richness and personality to the scheme, we introduced a decorative wallpaper with depth and character, layering pattern and visual interest into the room without overwhelming the natural material palette. The combination of oak, bespoke joinery, soft curves and expressive wallcovering helped us create a space that feels distinctive and playful, yet grounded.
Bespoke 3D Printed Lighting for a Bowling Alley Interior
Lighting was also developed as a bespoke design feature. Taking inspiration from bowling pins, we designed custom lights that were then 3D printed specifically for the project. These fittings act as both functional lighting and sculptural references to the room’s purpose, adding a subtle sense of wit and originality. It is these project-specific details that give the room its individuality and make the finished space feel completely tailored to the clients.
Self-Contained Garden Games Room with Separate WC
Alongside the main games room, we also integrated a separate WC into the building, ensuring the space could function comfortably and independently for longer periods of use. This practical addition was important in allowing the garden building to operate as a complete leisure destination in its own right.
Luxury Family Games Room for Entertaining at Home
What makes this Hertfordshire project so special is the way it combines joy with restraint. While the room is centred around entertainment, every decision was made with the same level of design care we would bring to any other architectural or interior space. The finished building feels calm, tactile and welcoming — a bespoke environment designed around connection, enjoyment and family life.
Bespoke Garden Building for Leisure, Craftsmanship and Fun
This is more than a games room. It is a carefully crafted extension to a garden building, designed to sit naturally within its surroundings and offer something genuinely unique for the people who use it. From the custom duck pin bowling alley to the curved oak seating, bespoke lighting and layered natural materials, every element was chosen to create a space that feels both special and effortless.
