Biomimicry and Architectural Metabolism is an extension of our biophilic design philosophy. Here at the Charlotte Findlater design studio, we hold biophilia at the heart of our design philosophy, reflecting our deep commitment to sustainability and harmony with nature. The themes seen within the architectural metabolism and biomimicry movements, reflect our approach completely, and allow us to expand our approach to environmentally conscious design.

Architectural Metabolism: Embracing Change and Resilience
Architectural metabolism, a concept born in the wake of Japan’s post-war reconstruction, views buildings and urban environments as living, evolving systems. This approach draws parallels between architectural structures and biological processes, emphasizing growth, adaptation, and sustainability. In our projects, this philosophy translates into embracing the life cycle of spaces, respecting their historical layers while preparing them for future transformation and utilization.

By integrating the existing characteristics of a space with innovative, eco-friendly solutions, we aim to create environments that can grow and change with time, much like natural organisms. An example of this is the careful renovation of historical properties, where we preserve original features while updating them for contemporary use, demonstrating our architectural metabolism in action.

Images shown from our previous projects have allowed the property to organically develop, with the needs of the client and what brings value to their lives, without compromising the beauty of the existing building.
Biomimicry: Harnessing Nature’s Ingenuity
Biomimicry guides our design process, inspiring us to look to nature for solutions, efficiency, and beauty. This principle is woven into every aspect of our work:
- Emulation of Natural Processes: Our designs are informed by the inherent wisdom found in natural ecosystems, leading to spaces that are energy-efficient, conducive to well-being, and environmentally integrated. This might include harnessing natural light, optimizing for natural ventilation, or selecting materials that minimize ecological footprints.
- Supporting Life Forms: Beyond human-centric design, we ensure our projects contribute positively to local wildlife and biodiversity. This involves thoughtful landscaping, use of native plants, and the creation of habitats that encourage natural ecosystems to flourish alongside human activity.
- Fostering Connection and Reconnection: We believe in the power of spaces to reconnect individuals with the natural world. Through the integration of biophilic design elements, we create environments that improve mental and physical health, fostering a deep, intrinsic connection between people and their surroundings.
By marrying the concepts of biomimicry and architectural metabolism, we produce designs that not only reflect the organic and adaptive principles of nature but also respect the interdependence of all living systems. Our approach ensures that each project not only meets the Client’s immediate needs but also contributes to the larger ecological and social fabric.
“The conscious emulation of life’s genius is a natural part of biophilia … we are drawn to life’s mastery and to try, with equal parts awe and envy, to do what birds and fish and insects to … the act of asking nature’s advice, of valuing nature for its wisdom, bridge the distance that has developed between humans and the rest of life. In this way, biomimicry is a process of homecoming akin to biophilia”
Jane Benyus
We see examples of birds being used for the natural aero-dynamics in tall skyscrapers that carve the wind around them for a more pleasant human interaction. Or seemingly interlocking and twisted structures modelled off of birds nest as seen in Beijing’s National Stadium or The Supertree Grove in Bay Park, Singapore.

Through our commitment to these principles, we challenge the norms of traditional architecture, advocating for spaces that are not just built but are grown and nurtured, aligning with our core ethos of sustainability, wellness, and enduring design. In doing so, we set new standards for what it means to create truly sustainable and life-enhancing environments.
